A coalition of Hawaii-based film industry professionals has formed to combat the production slow down in the state.
The group, Hawaii Film Alliance, in part advocates for the removal of the state's tax credit caps, of are $50m annually and $17m per production which it says are "limiting growth potential".
The incentive is 22% on O‘ahu, and 27% on neighbouring Islands (Maui, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i Island, Moloka‘i, Lānaʻi).
The alliance cites Jason Momoa's Apple TV+ series Chief of War, which filmed approximately 30 days in Hawaiʻi with the bulk of production taking in New Zealand despite it being a story about the unification of the Kingdom of Hawi'i, as a prime example of the cap's negative impact on an already shrinking production landscape.
HFA members include country film commissioners, production professionals, local businesses and more such as Honolulu film office deputy film commissioner Sanoe Damon; producer Angie Laprete whose credits include Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Amazon MGM's Wrecking Crew; and representative for the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE) Irish Barber, whose BTL credits include Jurassic World, Snatched, and Big Eyes.
