Film studio complex to be built in Jõhvi, Estonia in 2026

The Estonian Ida-Viru Investment Agency Foundation and construction company Mapri Ehitus have signed an agreement to build a film campus in Jõhvi Business Park in East Estonia in 2026.

The film studio complex, built with the support of the Just Transition Fund, will cost €16m and will include a creative industry incubator with film studios and multimedia incubator worth 4 million euros, alongside support infrastructure.

Teet Kuusmik, a member of the board of the Ida-Viru Investment Agency, notes that the Viru Film Fund has been bringing international film productions to the county for over ten years, and the establishment of the film campus is the next big step in developing the region's film industry.

In a statement he said: "Our main goal is to bring international film production here, supported by local companies offering a variety of services - such as post-production, sound, editing, animation, and set design." We want to reach full-scale service provision within five years, so that the entire production process – from filming to the finished film – can take place right here in Jõhvi.”

The second goal of the project is to attract young talents to Ida-Viru County and provide creative people with opportunities for self-realisation in the film industry.

Tiina Lokk-Tramberg, director of the Black Nights Film Festival, considers the Jõhvi Film Campus to be an exceptionally important step in the economic and cultural development of both the domestic film industry and the entire Ida-Viru County.
